Dear Residents of Johnstown and Milliken, and Honored Guests, I am delighted to invite you to our special event celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Johnstown Meteorite, a cornerstone of our town’s rich history and a marvel of scientific discovery.
A century ago, on July 6, 1924, a meteorite dramatically interrupted a funeral service near the Dilley Chapel in Elwell. Witnesses saw a smoke trail streaking across Northern Colorado, followed by explosive sounds that echoed like dynamite blasts. This unexpected celestial event shattered the quiet Sunday afternoon, leaving some to think they were witnessing the end of the world. Ironically, the funeral procession for John Moore of Milliken had just passed the impact site, adding to the surreal atmosphere.
