CHEERFUL LEARNERS

Cheerful Learners met Nov. 19 at the home of Barbara Tregoning. Lyn Russell served as her co-hostess.

Club President Barbara Sloan opened the meeting with the pledge to the flag and the club collect. The minutes of the previous meeting were approved as read. The treasurer’s report was given.

Only 10 members answered roll call with their plans for Thanksgiving. Thank yous were read from the Glenn A. Jones Memorial Library for our donation and the Knights of Columbus and the youth of the United Methodist Church for donations toward Thanksgiving Baskets.

Members voted to give $50 to the Calico and Jeans 4-H Club, and to renew our membership in the Johnstown Historical Society along with the usual donation.

The new address for Virginia Nazarenus was given to members to update their program books.

Officers for the group were railroaded to serve another year.

The next meeting will be the Christmas party held at Johnson’s Corner with husbands as our guests. This will be Dec. 17 with supper at 6 p.m. Members are reminded to bring their secret sister gifts.

Cheerful Learners

The fall meeting of Cheerful Learners was held Oct. 15 at the home of Ruby Spaur. Jean Hoffman served as co hostess.

Barbara Sloan opened the meeting with the pledge to the flag and the club collect. Roll call was answered by Helen Chesnut, Sandra Hays, Jean Hoffman, Ann Hughes, Charlene Nelson, Ruth Nelson, Kelly Portz, Bonnie Ruppert, Lyn Russell, Barbara Sloan, Barbara Tregoning and Johnny Ullmann. They answered with ideas where they thought some of our monies should be donated.

Treasurer gave her report. There were no bills and no correspondence. The group voted to donate $100 to the library and $50 each to the Catholic and Methodist Thanksgiving food baskets.

Ruby Spaur will do some shopping for Milliken Elementary School and present the bill at the next meeting. It was moved to table any more giving until next meeting. The next meeting will be held Nov. 19 at the home of Barbara Tregoning. The answer to roll call will be food donations to the Weld County Food Bank. The next meeting will be time for dues and the election of officers for the coming year.

Meeting adjourned and Jean Hoffman gave a quiz on candidates and officers in local and state and federal offices; as to how many and how they were elected. She then passed out booklets to the members from the League of Women Voters and gave pros and cons on the three state ballot issues. First was the State Personal system, the second on the use and regulations of marijuana, and the third was the proposed amendment to support campaign finance limits. Be sure to get out and vote on Nov. 6.

Cheerful Learners met Sept. 17 at the home of Barb Sloan. Members present included Sloan, Helen Chesnut, Sandra Hays, Jean Hoffman, Ann Hughes, Ruth Nelson, Kelly Portz, Bonnie Ruppert, Ruby Spaur, Barbara Tregoning, and Johnny Ullman.

After the Pledge of Allegiance and the Club Collect were said, correspondence from the Glenn A. Jones M.D. Memorial Library, League of Women Voters, and Champion Senior Citizen cake decorator Marilyn White was read, thanking the Cheerful Learners for their support. Chesnut followed with the treasurer’s report.

In new business:

– Future monetary donation recipients were discussed. A gift of clothing to the elementary schools was tabled until the next meeting. It was decided before the October meeting is held, members will focus on possible organizations that should be considered as recipients of future donations.

– The Cheerful Learners’ Christmas party will be held at Johnson’s Corner.

In committee reports:

– Ullman, the Sunshine Committee chairman, reported cards were sent to several members over the summer months.
The “home” program was led by Nelson. After joining to recall all phrases which include the word “home,” members immensely enjoyed reminiscing about “homecoming” and all the memories it brought to mind.

The meeting adjourned at 4:15 p.m.

The next meeting will be held Oct. 15, hosted by Spaur and Hoffman.

JOHNSTOWN-MILLIKEN ROTARY CLUB

At 7 a.m. last Thursday, the Johnstown/Milliken Rotary Club met in Johnson’s Corner for its June 28 meeting.

Jim Lutey gave the invocation. Torrin Williams led the club in the Pledge of Allegiance. President Colleen Flack led the group in the Four-Way-Test. Guests included Eli Wilcox and Dr. Duane Flack.

Colleen Flack, who was officiating her last official meeting, thanked the club for allowing her to serve for the past two years and presented each member with a letter of thanks.

June 29, the club held a “Changing of the Guard” ceremony at Hays Park in Johnstown, when Flack turned the gavel over to the incoming president, Vivian Tapp.

Flack told the club that along with the Centennial Rotary Club of Greeley and Johnson’s Corner, the J-M Club would provide a donation box at Johnson’s Corner for victims of the High Park Fire. The box will be placed this weekend and be available for about a month. Johnson’s Corner has graciously offered to match up to $10,000.

The donation box will be next to the display of a statue in Johnson’s Corner’s lobby of a firefighter. The statue is a replica of one donated to Williston Park Firehouse in New York as a 9/11 memorial. The artist is a member of the Centennial Club.

Dennis Reed noted the club will pick up litter along Colorado Highway 257 on the morning of July 28.

Club Member Marva Wilcox provided the morning’s program. She presented an update of the club’s international project: Blue Dragon, a school in Saigon, Viet Nam, that helps children get off the street and out of sweatshops.

The club will host a golf tournament on July 21 at The Mad Russian in Milliken. It is open to the public but will also feature a Rotary Team challenge in which teams from area Rotary Clubs will compete for a traveling trophy. Cost of the tournament is $80 per play, which includes a cart and catered meal. Sponsorship opportunities are available starting at $25. The Johnstown/Milliken Rotary Club meets at 7 a.m. every Thursday in Johnson’s Corner. The Board of Directors meets the second Monday of the month at 6:30 p.m. at the Milliken Police Department.
