JOHNSTOWN-MILLIKEN ROTARY CLUB
At 7 a.m. Dec. 12, the Johnstown/Milliken Rotary Club met in Johnson’s Corner.
Club President Vivian Tapp gave the invocation and led the club in both the Pledge of Allegiance and Four-Way-Test.
Guests included Assistant District Governor Susan Van Deren, Paula Grzenia, Stan Beltz, and Sonia Gonzales and her mother. Guests were welcomed with the singing of “We Wish You A Merry Christmas.” The club also sang “Happy Birthday” to Colleen Flack and Ken Grack.
President Tapp indicated Beltz had submitted an application for membership. She also reported the Black Friday Book Fair at Barnes and Noble brought in $1,110 in register sales. Added to the $265 in cash donations, the one-day event raised $1,375 for the Student of the Month program.
Van Deren presented the club with a check for $985 as part of the district’s Literacy Grant. The money will be used for literacy projects within the community.
Gonzales is the December Student of the Month. She said she plans on attending Colorado State University-Pueblo to study pre-med and was presented a certificate, medal, and $100 gift-card to Barnes and Noble.
The program for the day was an annual favorite – club member Ed Spreng singing Christmas carols and classic cowboy songs and playing his guitar.
Throughout the school year, at 6:30 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month at the Milliken Police Department, the Johnstown/Milliken Rotary Club hosts the Bedtime Reading Program for pre-school and grade school-aged children. They are read bedtime stories and enjoy making craft activities. Guest readers consist of local policemen, town officials, Santa Claus, Colorado Eagles hockey players, and sometimes even a clown. The program is co-organized with the Community Preschool, and Head Start teachers. Local merchants support the program by supplying milk, cookies, and pizza.
The Johnstown/Milliken Rotary Club meets at 7 a.m. every Thursday in Johnson’s Corner.
The Board of Directors meets the second Monday of the month at 6:30 p.m. at the Milliken Police Department. Anyone interested in becoming a member should contact Jordan Jemiola at (720) 261-0229, or at jemiola.jordan@gmail.com.
