Cheerful Learners
Cheerful Learners met at the home of Virginia Morris on May 20. Jean Hoffman served as her co-hostess. The meeting was opened by Barbara Sloan, president, with the pledge to the flag and the club collect.
Ruth Nelson, program chairman for this meeting, introduced Pat Betz from the Glenn A. Jones Library. She told of the summer reading program planned for this year. Its theme is “Dig into Reading.” Last summer they had 1,500 kids in the program. It is divided into three levels of reading. She also explained some of the new things to come and explained how we were related to the High Plains Library District.
Twelve members responded to roll call with their plans for summer. The treasury balance was given. A letter from the Weld County Fair Board asked for $80 to be used as prizes. This is $5 higher than normal. The group voted to add the $5 to our regular amount. They also voted to give $50 to the summer reading program. This also carried.
It was announced former member Ruby Pixler had passed away.
Next meeting (June 17) will be the salad luncheon at the home of Kelly Portz, with Anne Thomas serving as her co-hostess. Members are reminded this is when we give our secret sisters a birthday gift.
The July picnic will be held July 15 at 4 p.m. at the home of Ann Hughes.

JOHNSTOWN-MILLIKEN ROTARY CLUB
The Johnstown/Milliken Rotary Club met at 7 a.m. in Johnson’s Corner for its May 9 meeting.
Nancy Mayer gave the invocation, and Torrin Williams led the club in the Pledge of Allegiance and the Four-Way-Test.
Guests included Linda Measner, who has applied for membership, Eli Wilcox, Mike Fitzsimmons from the Greeley Centennial Club, and Past District Gov. Karen Sekich of the Longmont Twin Peaks Club. In lieu of singing to guests, club members “danced.”
Tonight (May 16) at 6:30, the club will host Bedtime Reading at the Milliken Police Dept. Featured are firefighters and medics. All children are welcome.
Club member Colleen Flack noted she has been in contact with the Chautauqua committee, and that it would like the club’s help with greeting visitors again this year.
Member Dennis Reed said he was planning a tentative trash pick-up day on July 27.
President Elect Jerry Dunn reminded members the 2nd annual Rotary Cup Golf Tournament is fast approaching, and recruitment teams should meet to establish plans of action. The tournament is scheduled for July 13 at The Mad Russian Golf Course in Milliken.
The week’s program, “Service Above Self,” was presented by Karen Sekich. As part of her program, she shared details about her club’s water and sanitation projects in Nicaragua.
The Johnstown/Milliken Rotary Club meets every Thursday at 7 a.m. at Johnson’s Corner. The board of directors meets the second Monday of the month at 6:30 p.m. at the Milliken Police Department.
