Family is the tie that binds. Good times come, and bad, but there is always family to share them with. Last Saturday night, the family (including friends) of Maria Lovato of Milliken packed a reception room at the Best Western Coach House in Loveland to help celebrate her birthday. Tuesday, Lovato, who raised 10 children mostly on her own, turned 80.
"My mom's life is like a beautiful firework spreading through the sky and our lives," said her eldest daughter, Eloisa Rodello.
Maria Martinez was born March 8, 1925, in Mosquero, N.M. When she was 15, she met 19-year-old Candelario Solano at a skating rink and they soon wed. From the union came a son, Chuck, then a daughter, Eloisa. In 1944, another son, Rudy, died as an infant.
"I think that's how I ended up in Colorado," Lovato said. "My mom died at the first part of August and then my son died at the end of the month. I came up to La Salle to see family and called my husband and said I wanted to move.
"I just don't think I wanted to go back there," she said with a sad smile.
