Fields lead to published author dream
By Matt Lubich/The Johnstown Breeze
Spying a copy of Carmel “Chuck” Solano’s new book The End of the Row, a youngster asks about the grainy black and white cover photo showing a 7-year-old Solano standing in a farm field, hoe in hand, the rows to be weeded stretching out to the horizon.
“Why didn’t they just use a tractor?”
Solano, 73, laughs when the story is related to him. That boy, and the hard work a child did with his family to survive seems a world away, he said, but is as close as the book he just published about growing up a member of a migrant worker family.
He will be at the Historic Parish House at 701 Charlotte Street in Johnstown this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. signing copies and talking about the experience at an event sponsored by the Johnstown Historical Society.
