JOHNSTOWN – Last Thursday, a family of five had to leave their home after it was severely damaged by a fire.
Johnstown-Milliken Fire Chief Ron Bateman said firefighters were called just after 5 a.m. May 9 because of smoke coming from a residence on Woodbine Lane in the Clearview neighborhood on the west side of town.
“They went into the attic and found heavy fire,” Bateman said. “(Firefighters from) Milliken brought in a second-hand line and were able to get ahead of the fire.”

Classmate cheering section - We all would likely welcome having this kind of support and encouragement. May 9, the Weld County Special Olympics were held at Northridge High School in Greeley. Representing Milliken Elementary School were Logan Wheeler and Anya Wild (inset). The entire first-grade class at MES attended the event to cheer them on. Following in the footsteps of his ancestors, this month’s Johnstown-Milliken Rotary Student of the Month has definite plans for his future and that of the industry in which he is involved.
Tyler Bauer, 18, son of Michelle Dickinson and Scott Bauer, both of Loveland, will graduate with Roosevelt High School’s Class of 2013 on May 26. He plans to attend Blinn College in Brenham, Texas, on a livestock judging scholarship, before transferring to Oklahoma State University, with plans for graduate studies in bovine reproduction and genetics at Kansas State University.
A student with a 3.5 grade-point average, Bauer was class president during his freshman, sophomore, and junior years and is currently Head Boy at Roosevelt, serving as Student Council co-president (with Head Girl Sami Oldson, the Rotary Student of the Month for January).
Five athletes to compete in six events at 4A meet

JOHNSTOWN – A quintet in a half-dozen events.
Five Roosevelt High School track-and-field athletes have qualified for this weekend’s Colorado High School State Championships that begin today (May 16) at Jefferson County Stadium in Lakewood.
In the state lineup are seniors Hannah Eining (100-meter hurdles), Viktor Baeza (110 and 300 hurdles), Tanner Starr (pole vault), junior Keira Maldonado (pole vault), and freshman Jacob Bejarano (high jump).
There were hopes to have sent more to state, but with the provision that only the top 18 in each event advance, there’s no more qualifying through league or regional championship meets.

Milliken man dies in 2-car crash

GREELEY – A car crash Tuesday night north of Milliken claimed the life of a Milliken man.
Sgt. Susan West, public information officer for the Greeley Police Department, said the two-vehicle accident occurred around 9:30 p.m. near the intersection of Colorado Highway 257 and Weld County Road 54.
After being transported to Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland, Weld County Coroner Mark Ward said Kevin Bachman, 31, of Milliken, was pronounced dead at 10:25 p.m.
GPD continues to investigate.
Starr stars at 4A state meet

LAKEWOOD – Way back on March 16, in the first meet of the track-and-field season, Tanner Starr stuck a result every other Class 4A pole vaulter had to aim for.
By clearing 14 feet, 6 inches, the Roosevelt High School senior not only won the title at the Windsor Invitational, he broke the school record and also set the bar at a height that put him atop the state’s standings.
However, because of a triceps injury, Starr didn’t compete again for several weeks. But his mark withstood the challenge for the duration of the season, and he entered the 2013 Colorado High School State Championships as the top-seeded pole vaulter in Class 4A.
Re-5J students to all get iPads

No more lugging to and from school a backpack stuffed with heavy textbooks.
Within two years, every student in the Weld Re-5J School District will have an iPad.
That was the unanimous decision by the Board of Education at its May 8 meeting.
Through its “1:1 iPad Initiative,” the district will supply students computer tablets in two waves. Each lightweight device will serve as a virtual backpack.
