Senior adds to Roosevelt’s pole vault lore

Like father, like son.
Nearly three decades ago, David Starr of Milliken was an Oklahoma state pole vault champion. In 1985, he won the Class 4A title with a height of 13 feet, 6 inches.
Last Saturday, at the Colorado High School State Track & Field Championships at Jefferson County Stadium in Lakewood, Starr’s son – Roosevelt High School senior Tanner Starr – was crowned as the 2013 4A pole vault champion.

Roosevelt reaches its golden anniversary, as Class of 2013 is its 50th group to graduate
It’s been a half-century since the inaugural graduating class filed out of Roosevelt High School.
At commencement ceremonies at 1 p.m. this Sunday at Peterson Field, just more than 130 seniors will receive diplomas as the Class of 2013 (see the special supplement in this issue).
Roosevelt’s Class of 1963 contained 52 seniors, many of whom still reside in the Johnstown-Milliken area and have memories of that golden age.

JOHNSTOWN – Last Thursday, a family of five had to leave their home after it was severely damaged by a fire.
Johnstown-Milliken Fire Chief Ron Bateman said firefighters were called just after 5 a.m. May 9 because of smoke coming from a residence on Woodbine Lane in the Clearview neighborhood on the west side of town.
“They went into the attic and found heavy fire,” Bateman said. “(Firefighters from) Milliken brought in a second-hand line and were able to get ahead of the fire.”

Classmate cheering section - We all would likely welcome having this kind of support and encouragement. May 9, the Weld County Special Olympics were held at Northridge High School in Greeley. Representing Milliken Elementary School were Logan Wheeler and Anya Wild (inset). The entire first-grade class at MES attended the event to cheer them on. Communities planning Memorial Day activities
JOHNSTOWN/MILLIKEN – Like Americans across the country, residents here will relax and recreate this coming long weekend but also take a moment to reflect on and honor the ultimate sacrifice some paid in defense of our country.
At 10 a.m. Friday, in Milliken, a memorial service is scheduled at the Milliken Veterans Memorial located at the Milliken Police Station and Meeting House, 1201 Broad.
At 11 a.m. Monday, members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2585 will conduct their annual ceremony at Johnstown Cemetery.
Afterward, a free and public pot luck will be held at the J-M Post Club, 104 S. 1st Pl., in Johnstown.
VALE funding available for victim support programs
GREELEY – Using money from penalties paid by convicted criminals, the Victim Assistance and Law Enforcement (VALE) Board is taking requests for funding.
With the availability of $35,000, agencies providing direct benefits to victims or witnesses of crimes in Weld County can now apply for a maximum of $7,000.
Applications are due to the Weld County District Attorney’s Victim/Witness Program by 3 p.m. June 5. They can be mailed (P.O. Box 1167, Greeley, CO 80631 attn: JoAnn Holden), or delivered (915 10th St, 2nd Floor).

Weiner dog race to benefit low-cost spay/neuter clinic
FORT COLLINS – Dachshund owners may already be a wiener.
The 2nd annual Running of the Wiener dachshund races, to benefit the Fort Collins Cat Rescue & Spay/Neuter Clinic, are scheduled for June 1 at the Big Beaver Brewing Co., 2707 W. Eisenhower Blvd., in Loveland. Also sponsoring the event is the brewery’s neighbor, Blue Sky Animal Clinic.
Event registration is free, but there is a 25-pound weight limit. All dogs must be current on their rabies vaccinations and be kept on a leash.

‘Making Colorado’ initiative calls for prep senior applicants
DENVER – One senior-to-be from each of Colorado’s 64 counties will form the Making Colorado team. Applications are due June 6.
Youth ambassadors will be selected to serve on the Making Colorado Brand Council, a group comprised of influential professionals at Colorado companies and organizations.
Throughout the summer, team members will participate in webinars to learn about marketing and social media strategy.

Old-school exhibit running for graduation, BBQ Day

JOHNSTOWN – In celebrating the 50th anniversary of Roosevelt High School, some special events are scheduled both this weekend for Roosevelt’s graduation and also next weekend for Johnstown BBQ Day.
Sharon Held, president of the RHS Alumni Association, said a historical display of memorabilia from Roosevelt, Johnstown High School, and Milliken High School is on exhibit through June 1 at RHS.
The display was arranged and organized by members of the historical societies from both Milliken and Johnstown.
