Johnstown Council approves shooting range

JOHNSTOWN – Residents said no, as did the mayor. But the council said yes, and Liberty Firearms took a step forward in coming to Johnstown.
Liberty Firearms will build on eight acres owned by Thompson Ranch Development Company in the northwest corner of the 2534 commercial area. Its shooting range will measure 100,000 square feet, with an underground shooting range featuring 60 lanes.
The company is working on a final design, which must be approved by the Johnstown Council and 2534 design review committees.
Initial action was taken during the council’s meeting Monday, when it approved amending design guidelines for the 2534 subdivision by a 5-1 vote. Mayor Mark Romanowski cast the only dissenting vote. Councilmember Scott James was absent.
The amendment allows Liberty Firearms to use gun store accessories such as gunsmith services and an underground shooting range.
