Pigskin pilgrimage —

Roosevelt High School Head Football Coach Ed Eastin (left) and Jerry Forte of Johnstown show their team allegiance standing in front of the entrance to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. The pair made the trip to Ohio in mid-August to see former Denver Bronco Floyd Little inducted into the Hall of Fame. During his playing days, Little wore number 44, and Eastin sports a shirt with the “retro” Bronco logo the team used during Little’s playing days.  Photo courtesy of Jerry Forte. Band ‘fares’ well in Pueblo The Roosevelt High School Marching Band traveled to Pueblo last Saturday and competed in the Colorado State Fair Parade contest. It was a long hot day, but the band gave a tremendous effort and came away with the first-place trophy in its 1A/2A division. Roosevelt’s band has been going to the Colorado State Fair Parade since at least 1997, but RHS Principal John Bruce thinks Rough Rider bands have been going even longer than that: since about 1992 or ’93.  During that time, the RHS band has had many second- and third-place finishes, but this is the first time it has come away with the top trophy. “This is a great start to the band’s competitive season,” RHS Band Director John Balderson said. “We hope to build upon this success over the next couple of months.” If you would like more information about the RHS band program, call Balderson at 587-6115, or e-mail jbalderson@weldre5j.k12.co.us. Also, attend RHS home football games to watch the band in action at halftime. Photo by Claudia Arriaga

How did Chaunte Weber spend the start of her summer vacation?

By going back to school.

Trustees take stand on ballot issues

By Martin B. Hamilton/The Johnstown Breeze

MILLIKEN – Election season got underway last month with party primary elections that determined candidates for public offices in the upcoming General Election.

There are, however, other items that should concern registered voters when they cast their ballots on Nov. 2.

That is why the Board of Trustees unanimously approved a resolution opposing Proposition 101 and Amendments 60 and 61.

Scorer’s table gets OK by board

By Matt Lubich/The Johnstown Breeze

Call it a sign of these modern times.

With school finances tightening, districts across the country are looking for new ways to raise revenue. Aug. 25, the Re-5J Board of Education approved an agreement with an Ohio company for a new advertiser-supported scorer’s table in the gymnasium at Roosevelt High School that will help augment the school’s activity fund.

Board member Carolyn Breninger voted no. Board member Duane Shable was not in attendance.

Downtown Construction

Project preparing to switch sides of the street — If you stand at one end of Parish Avenue or the other, and look at the two sides of the street, you can begin to get a sense of what the Johnstown downtown streetscape project will look like when completed next month. Crews spent the week on the west side of the street laying brick pavers between the curb and gutter and new wider sidewalk, as well as finishing concrete intersection work on both ends of the block. Following the Labor Day holiday, crews plan to move to the east side of Parish Avenue. Demolition work will again be done at night, so as not to disrupt businesses. Traffic will be limited to southbound travel. All downtown businesses are open throughout the construction project. Photo by Lesli Bangert
